How did you get into the fitness lifestyle?

I was active as a child, having started gymnastics by the age of 3. I was active, dedicated and disciplined from a young age, as I started competing in gymnastics and continued well into my teens. After I decided to hang up my leotard and say good-bye to traveling around to gymnastics meets, I participated in competition cheerleading which provided another outlet for all of my energy and desire to be active. How did you get started?

I’ve always been active and have enjoyed weightlifting and running.  But after having my three children, when my youngest was 2, my husband got deployed to Afghanistan with the Army.  While I had been working out, I wasn’t as consistent as I had once been before having children.   Read the rest of this entry »

Tara Thatcher’s passion for fitness started at an early age. Thatcher was always active, and tried several different sports. By the time Tara Thatcher reached high school, she had narrowed them down to track and field, swimming and speedskating. How did you get started?

I grew up a dancer, formally trained in ballet, so I’d always been very active as a kid. I stopped dancing due to tendinitis in my toes in high school. When I moved away from home to attend University I lived in the “athletes’ residence” so I had many friends that went to the on campus gym. I got my first gym membership and started working out. Julie Costa has been competing since 2006; she got into competing to start doing something else with her life besides work. Julie Costa always went to the gym, so this seemed like a healthy hobby. Costa read a lot about competing in magazines and learned about Cathy Savage, a well known coach here in MA.
